How to dispose of your Sample

Since your microbiome culture may contain living microorganisms, it should be treated as biological (biochemical) waste after documentation. Proper disposal helps prevent unintended environmental release and keeps the process safe for you and others.

We recommend disinfecting your culture dish using household bleach.

Step-by-step disposal guide

  1. Do not open the dish unnecessarily once the culture has grown and been documented.
  2. Prepare a disinfecting solution using household bleach (sodium hypochlorite).
  3. Carefully pour enough bleach into the dish to fully cover the culture surface.
  4. Allow the bleach to act for at least 30 minutes to ensure effective deactivation of microorganisms.
  5. After disinfection, seal the dish in a plastic bag.
  6. The sealed dish can then be disposed of in regular household waste.
  7. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

Important

  • Avoid pouring untreated cultures down the sink or toilet.
  • Do not attempt to grow the culture for extended periods (beyond one week)
  • Keep cultures away from children and pets.

This simple procedure ensures that participation in the project remains safe while respecting basic laboratory hygiene principles.
